NGA ARA PAI PROGRAMME - GISBORNE
On the 21st of May 2013 a driver mentoring programme was lauched to address the high number of young people who are failing the restricted driver's licence test throughout Tairawhiti. In fact, in the Tairawhiti/Hawkes Bay district over half of the number of people attempting to pass their restricted drivers licence were failing and this needed to be addressed. The other unfortunate statistic is 21% of all vehicle crashes are attributed to those on a graduated drivers licence. Therefore, the programme will initially be targeting young drivers in the age group of 17 - 24 years of age.
The project is called Nga Ara Pai Community Driver Mentoring Program and is a partnership between Gisborne District Council, New Zealand Transport Agency, PassRite Driving Academy and the Gisborne Police. Here at We Train You Gisborne, PassRite East has been contracted to coordinate the project along with other driver training schools.
The programme matches a graduated driver who has completed their drivers learner licence with a capable mentor and will be trained in a provided vehicle for around 30 hours of tuition over 12 weeks. Many of our young people don't have access to a vehicle, cannot afford driving lessons, or their parents have difficulty finding time to take them for driving lessons. Therefore, they are guided by the mentor who will provide them with understanding and getting to grips with all the nuances of driving on our roads and gaining the skills to confidently sit the restricted driving test at the end of the programme. The mentors themselves are trained by qualified instructors.
The wider outcomes of this initiative are significant; not only does it give a greater understanding of their driving habits and respect for our roads, it also opens up pathways to employment opportunities that many of our young people will be competing for in the future.
